While reading the Wikipedia entry on temporal mechanics, I came across this;

“Tourism in time

Stephen Hawking once suggested that the absence of tourists from the future constitutes an argument against the existence of time travel—a variant of the Fermi paradox. Of course this would not prove that time travel is physically impossible, since it might be that time travel is physically possible but that it is never in fact developed; and even if it is developed, Hawking notes elsewhere that time travel might only be possible in a region of spacetime that is warped in the right way, and that if we cannot create such a region until the future, then time travelers would not be able to travel back before that date, so “This picture would explain why we haven’t been over run by tourists from the future.”

So, I emailed Prof. Hawking…

Email to Stephen Hawking:

Professor Hawking,
In the Wikipedia entry on time travel theory, I see your postulate on the lack of time travelling vacationers. While I find the ideas you posit likely, I can also just as likely make an argument for the avoidance of causality issues being the culprit too. Have you ruled this out altogether because you are not a big believer in causality issues? Just curious…
Cheers,
Scot.

The response I got autogenerated:

Your email to Professor Hawking has been received.

Professor Hawking very much regrets that due to the severe limitations he works under, and the huge amount of mail he receives, he may not have time to compose a reply. All e-mail is read, however we do not have the resources to deal with the many specific scientific enquiries and theories we receive.

Please see the website http://www.hawking.org.uk for more information about Professor Hawking, his life and his work.

Yours faithfully

Wonder if he will write back…..

Of Morlochs and Eloi

Last night I watched the 1960 Rod Taylor version of H.G. Wells “Time Machine” and it got me to thinking. Wells had written of a future where the “pretty” populace was no more than fatted calves for the Morlochs, a race of troglodytes using them for food.

It then hit me at the end of the film.. America’s kids, you are now becoming the Eloi. Fat, stupid, and fodder for the Morloch government. Perhaps its not so much the government as much as our own sloth, greed, and need for instant gratification. However, the politicians do count on this feeble mindedness don’t they. Especially the current admin.

I could just not help but see the likeness between the simple minded “Weena” and the average game console jockey slacker today… Better watch it kids, or Morloch Cheney is gonna send your ass to Iraq.. Or eat you…

All in all, Wells had an interesting morality tale to tell and a novel idea in coining the phrase “Time Machine”
